In providing an exhaustive means of quick mode encoding, the idea was to give music programmers an easy way to interchangeably switch between subtle mode constraint. Showing how it could be made easy to never play a wrong note anticipated the eventual Guitar Hero.
This is not a fanciful claim, as these implications are specifically called out by the gracious Leslie Heeter for Computer Music Journal 10/3 p92. I had given her a copy after my presentation at Dr. Goldarb’s ANSI conference in 1985 May.
